Model guide
Turbine Models
Turbines that do the same job behave very differently. A geared Vestas and a gearless Enercon do not share a maintenance calendar or a fault list. These pages compare the models you meet in the field using manufacturer-published data and field maintenance topics.
Each model page carries sourced specifications, a comparison table against its sibling model, model-specific systems and the maintenance topics that matter in the field. For how the systems work in general, see turbine systems.

Frequently asked
Is a gearless (direct-drive) turbine better?
For maintenance, yes: with no gearbox there is no gear wear, no oil change and no reduction-stage failure. In exchange the annular generator is very heavy, which makes transport and erection harder and raises the initial cost, and generator thermal management becomes the main thing you watch.
How long does it take to erect a wind turbine?
It varies a lot with site conditions, tower type and the crane plan, so a single number would mislead. What drives it most is the number and height of tower sections, blade length, crane rig-up and the days lost waiting out the wind limit. On sites with concrete or hybrid towers, building the tower is a separate job on top.
