Technical reference

Gearbox

The gearbox raises the slow rotor speed to the much higher speed the generator needs. In geared turbines it is one of the most expensive components and can cause the longest downtime, so reading early warnings is valuable.

General reference. Values, limits, intervals and torques vary by turbine type; the OEM documentation always governs.

Main parts

  • Planetary and helical stages
  • Lubrication circuit — pump, filters, thermostatic valve, oil–air cooler and fan, heater, breather
  • Sensors — oil and bearing temperatures, oil pressure, filter differential pressure; often a condition monitoring system (CMS)

Common faults and where to look first

  • Hotter than neighbours at the same power: oil level and leaks, cooler, thermostatic valve, filter
  • One bearing temperature stands out: CMS spectrum, metal in oil, borescope
  • Water or degraded oil: oil analysis, breather, cooler

Safety

Rotating shafts, hot oil and hot surfaces are the main hazards. Inspections and sampling follow the OEM instructions with the turbine in the appropriate mode.
