Gearbox temperature rises with wind
Gearbox temperature warning for three windy days; the turbine keeps running.
Representative case. This page describes a fault pattern that is common in the field, as a diagnostic sequence. It does not describe a specific wind farm, turbine or date; numbers are examples only and limits vary by turbine type. On your own turbine the OEM instructions, LOTO procedure and safety rules apply; work near energised equipment is for authorised personnel only.
Symptom
Gearbox temperature warning for three windy days; the turbine keeps running.
What was measured
On a temperature-versus-power plot the turbine sits in its own band above its neighbours. Oil level below minimum, oily dust around the breather.
Root cause
A leaking shaft seal; with the level low, less oil passed through the cooler.
Fix and verification
Oil topped up with the OEM-approved type, leak monitored; seal replacement and oil analysis scheduled.
Lesson
Read temperature against power, and next to the neighbours — not against time.
