Model guide
Enercon E-82
The gearless Enercon model with an 82 m rotor. It was built at several ratings: E-82 E2 at 2.0 and 2.3 MW, E-82 E4 in the 3.0 MW class. The same rotor comes with different generator and control configurations, so in the field “E-82” needs the variant spelled out.
What defines this model
The rotor drives a multi-pole synchronous annular generator directly. Speed is low (6–19.5 rpm on the E2) and the generator diameter is large. With no gearbox there are no oil changes, gear pitting or gearbox bearings on the list.
The price is weight and heat: the annular generator is heavy and large, and its transport and lift need special planning. Maintenance attention moves from the gearbox to generator cooling and the pitch system’s emergency supply.

Drivetrain and systems
Annular generator
- Keeping the cooling air paths open is the most critical periodic job in this design; a clogged path comes straight back as a temperature warning. A case walking through a similar mechanism: generator temperature alarm.
Storm control
- Speed and power are reduced gradually as the wind rises — a soft transition instead of a hard cut-out. Low power in high wind can look like a fault.
- With fewer stop–start cycles, structural fatigue drops as well.
Pitch and redundancy
- Each blade is controlled by its own drive, with an emergency source to feather the blades on grid loss. In a gearless design the aerodynamic brake is the primary safety, so testing that source is critical.

Maintenance topics that matter in the field
- Generator temperature: cooling air paths and filters.
- Pitch emergency supply: capacity test.
- Yaw: adjustment gears and lubrication; the first place to look for hunting. Case: yaw hunting.
- Converter modules and their cooling.
